Abstract: |
The cross was documented in its present position from 1887. It had been suggested that it was moved from the more important crossroads to the north-east, now known as Eastacott Cross but marked as Brightley Cross on 19th-century maps, although there was no definite documentary or archaeological evidence for this. The excavations for the new foundation exposed the shoulders and base of the shaft, which had previously been buried. The bottom 0.50 had been only roughly dressed and was irregularly shaped. This section would probably have been set in a stone base originally. The existing foundation consisted of a pit approximately 0.80m long and 0.70m wide and 0.90m deep below present ground level, with packing stones around the shaft. The base of the pit was only visible where it was cut into the shale bedrock. The upper edges of the cut could not be distinguished from the surrounding bank material, indicating that the foundation had been excavated and then quickly backfilled. [Au(abr)] |
