Abstract:
MoLAS was called to the development on the discovery of human remains during the conversion of the building into a public house. The human remains had been found, apparently in situ, immediately below the slab in the east-west trench, but these had been removed from the ground prior to the arrival of an archaeologist. Examination of the area of the trench from which the bones had been removed was clear. No further human remains were visible anywhere within the trench nor was any dating evidence recovered. A second collection of human bone had been recovered from the north-south trench. The precise location could not be determined from the trench, as the west section showed 19th century foundations and the east section only showed brick rubble. All the burials were medieval but the dating sequence for this part of the cemetery had yet to be established. The inhumations encompassed the remains of at least five individuals. Two of the skeletons were truncated above the waist. However, the presence of bones from further individuals here suggested that it was chiefly disarticulated bone from several medieval graves. This was the first archaeological evidence of the location of the Pardon churchyard. [Au(adp)]
