Abstract: |
Two watermeadows were surveyed and spot heights taken at Chenies, in order to assist in long term monitoring of the site's state of preservation, as part of the County Council's Chilterns Project. Field one had been previously surveyed in 1812, comparison with the 1997 survey made evident the fact that the area of watermeadow was increased at some point and the position of the hatch, where water entered the stem, or header channel, must also have been moved upstream, while part of the water meadow system had been destroyed by a modern swimming pool. The hydraulic works were generally much better defined in field 2 and the similarity in spacing between the furrows in field 2 and an extension to that in field 1 suggests they were both installed at the same time after the 1812 survey. In addition to recording the layout of the water meadows themselves, the survey identified the presence of a number of additional features across field two which may also have been associated with the water management. These included a palaeochannel, part of what appears to be the roof of a culvert, a shallow drain and two shallow channels. [AIP] |
