Abstract:
The excavation and watching brief uncovered evidence of the east wall of the 14th-century aisled hall. Test pitting uncovered the remains of stone cobbling that represented a yard surface laid along the eastern side of the hall. The test pitting and underpinning also identified a dark brown clay layer observed throughout the groundworks on the moat platform. This layer may have been imported specifically onto site to level the upper portion of the platform, around the earlier 13th century hall, of which only the south cross-wing or buttery remained, and prior to the construction of the 14th century house, on which it was clearly built.
