Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a hotel development which constituted an Area of High Archaeological Potential. The park at Cricket St Thomas was Grade II* Listed, and a number of Listed Buildings lay within the site. The possible location of an earlier manor house also lay within the proposal area. During the evaluation, twelve test-pits targeting areas of archaeological potential were excavated. A possible ditch containing a sherd of 18th century or later pottery, a pathway of similar date and cultivation soil were revealed. No features or deposits pre-dating the 18th century were found, other than one ploughsoil deposit which contained medieval pottery. The lack of archaeological remains may have been due to extensive 18th and 19th century cultivation activites. Recent construction work had also caused soome disturbance. It was concluded that, although the excavation sample had been relatively limited, the results were reasonably representative of the general character of archaeological deposits within the proposed development areas.
