Abstract: |
Archaeological excavation revealed ditches of Roman and Saxo-Norman date, which probably represented the remains of field boundaries. The sequence of ditches and low drystone walls may have reflected the shifting boundaries of low-lying fields on the floodplain of the river Nene, used for pastoral grazing until recent times. The site was located on the periphery of a villa estate in the immediate hinterland of the Roman town of Durobrivae. Saxon-Norman remains were similar to those found in earlier excavations to the south of Water Newton. [Au(abr)] |
