Abstract: |
Six trenches were excavated to evaluate land proposed for a supermarket development with ancillary car parking. Although some modern disturbance was encountered, medieval layers were found to survive to a depth of between 0.6m and 1.1m. The finds generally reflected domestic activities, probably originating from buildings to the south on the Medieval High Street. Phases of more intensive activity appeared to have been interspersed with periods of flooding. The alluvium overlay brown clayey loam, which contained relatively less finds, and sealed a substantial deposit of peat (which along with the alluvial deposits was sampled for environmental analysis).
