Abstract: |
In advance of the determination of planning and listed building applications to convert an existing warehouse to office accommodation a desktop study was completed. The study showed that prior to its develpment in the 18th century, the site of Protheroes Warehouse had been part of a large area of gardens and orchards belonging to the 13th century St Mark's Hospital, the estates of which subsequently passed to the Trustees of Queen Elizabeth's Hospital c.1590. Subsequent to the development of the area, probably around 1720, the present site was occupied by a small group of buldings consisting of a house, malthouse, warehouse and stables. Further development took place around 1800 or soon after when the original warehouse and stables were replaced and the present building erected. Several alterations, including the blocking of a number of windows, removal of elements of stone relieving arches, insertion of a modern lift and partitioning of some of the floors were identified.
