Abstract:
A phased programme of extensive renovation and landscaping was proposed for the Great Fosters Hotel Site, which covered a total area of 47 acres. The potential for archaeology on this site was high: prehistoric sites and finds had been identified across the Egham and Runnymede landscape. The Bronze Age site at Thorpe Lea Nurseries, now separated from Great Fosters by the M25 motorway, may have extended towards the Great Fosters site. It was possible that the land surrounding Great Forsters would contain finds and features cutting into the gravel and sealed by later alluvial silt. The eastern property boundary of Great Fosters was demarked by a small stream and hedge line, which also formed the line of the historic Parish Boundary. The presence of an earlier palaeo-channel had been identified c.50m to the west of the present stream, suggesting that natural streams had divided the local landscape throughout the Post-Glacial period. During the historic period, and possibly earlier, these features had defined and influenced the form and character of the cultural landscape. The potential of finding the foundations of outbuildings associated with the earlier Tudor House was high. Given the advanced stage of construction works, a programme of evaluation and watching brief work was recommended. With the commencement of site works, archaeological monitoring had recorded finds and features of both prehistoric, Anglo-Saxon and post-medieval date on the site of Great Fosters. [Au(abr)]
