Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was carried out as the first stage of archaeological investigations in advance of the erection of a single dwelling and drive adjacent to the walled garden within the estate. Documents studied showed the walled garden to have been constructed around 1740. Cartographic evidence suggested that the proposed development area remained undeveloped, possibly being an orchard or cultivated plot until between 1870-1897 when a glasshouse was sited on the eastern edge. Other glasshouses were added at later dates, being terraced into the slope of the ground, suggesting that any earlier evidence would have been truncated during their construction. [Au(adp)] |
