Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of an office development identified that it lay within an Area of High Archaeological Potential. Prehistoric artefacts had been recorded in the surrounding area, including a possible Palaeolithic backed blade, Mesolithic flints, a Late Neolithic discoidal knife and pottery and an arrowhead of Bronze Age date, whilst part of an Iron Age farmstead had been excavated. A small number of Roman finds had been recorded, and a number of Saxon inhumations had been found in close proximity to the proposal site. Although there was no clear evidence to suggest that the site had been developed during the medieval period, it lay beside the Leatherhead to Guildford Road, and the site of the 14th or 15th century 'Old Rising Sun' 50m to the south-west may have suggested that some ribbon development had taken place along the road. The area of the proposal site appeared to have been prone to flooding, and was likely to have been put to agricultural use when possible. A bus garage had been constructed on the northern part of the site in 1925, and had been extended in 1928. It was concluded that the site had a high potential for prehistoric and Saxon remains, and that although previous development was likely to have had considerable impacts on any remains, archaeological survival was likely to have been extensive. A field evaluation was recommended. [AIP]
