Abstract: |
Archaeological salvage recording was carried out at 41-43 High Street, Wednesfield during preliminary trial-pitting, and following the demolition of existing structures and removal of an oversite slab and overburden from the site. Documentary and place-name evidence suggested that Wednesfield dated from the 10th century, when the area lay within a major royal estate. Topographic analysis also suggested that a number of modern-day property plots reflected the medieval topography of the settlement which was unaffected by the much later construction of the Wyrley and Essington canal. Below ground investigation within Wednesfield identified deep deposits of clinker and industrial waste. These deposits, together with imported topsoil, may have sealed earlier deposits and features.
