Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to proposed re-development. The location of the site on the terrace gravels and the proximity to the River suggested the potential of prehistoric remains. Judging by finds in the vicinity, the highest potential for archaeological remains, was from the Roman period and evidence of medieval agricultural practices, such as ridge and furrow systems. Whilst there was a moderate potential of archaeology in the area, the 1960s extension to the library may have truncated or totally destroyed some evidence. The depth of possible archaeology and natural gravels was unknown and depended on the amount of build up of deposits over the years. At Newnham House c.150m to the east, natural gravels were encountered at c.1.4m below the ground surface. The survival of the archaeology was also dependent in the type of features present. Ultimately the actual survival of any archaeological feature could only be determined through testing. [Au(adp)] |
