Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of two proposed development sites identified that earthworks associated with medieval strip fields survived in one, and that extensive areas of fossilised strips lay in the surrounding landscape. The remains of a small Roman villa lay to the west of the sites, and a Roman temple had also lain nearby. Post-medieval industrial sites in the area included an ironworks and a tinplate works, and shipbuilding had taken place in the early 17th century. Estuarine alluvium at the proposal sites indicated a potential for buried prehistoric landscapes. A survey of the medieval strip fields, in addition to a programme of environmental sampling and trial excavation, was recommended. [AIP] |
