Abstract: |
The natural bedrock appeared to be c.1m below the existing ground surface on the north side of the church, but to be somewhat higher at the east and west ends; in test pit 3 the chamfered plinth of the tower rested directly on the bedrock. On average, only another one or two courses of masonry were exposed. No definite evidence for any earlier structures was uncovered in any of the test pits, but some information was gathered to reflect the complex structural development of the church. A small number of disarticulated human bones were recovered from test pit 6 at a depth of 0.50m below the existing internal floor surface. [Au(abr)] |
