Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken of the likely archaeological potential of a proposed extension to Stowe Hill Quarry. The study suggested that the proposed extraction area contained two areas of undated earthworks and had a general potential to contain further evidence of archaeological activity. The general potential for prehistoric, Roman and early medieval archaeology was uncertain. Throughout these periods the general area of the site was likely to have been located within possibly quite heavy woodland. However, the presence of possible Bronze Age barrows and the recovery of prehistoric flint in one part of the site did indicate some prehistoric activity and it was possible that areas within the site on the immediate vicinity were cleared of woodland for settlement and other activities. The general potential for later medieval archaeology within the area of proposed development was uncertain. There was extensive clearance of woodland from the later medieval period onwards. The site lay at the site of a main road, opposite known medieval settlement at Stowe Green. Evidence suggested that the site lay within open fields adjacent to Stowe Green, that had been cleared of woodland for arable cultivation or for pasture. It was unlikely that there were any buildings in the open fields, although there existed a potential for roadside settlement. On the basis of the known and general archaeological potential of the site it was suggested that a further programme of archaeological prospection and survey should be carried out in order to further clarify the likely archaeological implications of the proposed extraction activities.
