Abstract: |
The assessment dealt with the proposed 12km BG Energy Services natural gas pipeline that lay to the north east of Scunthorpe. The proposed route ran between Ferriby Sluice on the south bank of the Humber, and Sandhouse Farm, Broughton. For almost its entire length it followed the route of Ermine Street Roman road, running along the roadside verges of the A1077 and the B1207, and a minor road between these two roads. There was a low to moderate density of archaeological sites within the majority of the study corridor, but a high density at the north end, either side of Eastfield Farm. Most of the evidence was for Roman occupation and settlement. This included Ermine Street itself, Old Winteringham Roman settlement, which constituted the majority of the remains near Eastfield Farm, and a probable villa site south east of Winterton. Evidence belonging to the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic periods was rare, with few known sites in the area and virtually none in the study corridor. Bronze Age sites were also small in number, although an important hoard of weapons was located inside of the corridor north of Appleby. The area had greater numbers of Iron Age sites, such as Dragonby to the west of the corridor, although few were recorded within the study area. No Anglo-Saxon evidence was recorded inside of the corridor, except for a bronze stud. Medieval remains were more frequent within the corridor, and included Appleby village, two cross bases, and remains of ridge and furrow earthworks. A number of post-medieval Listed Buildings were present within Appleby village. A small number of undated cropmark sites were also present within and just beyond the study corridor. [Au(abr)] |
