Abstract: |
The Custom House is a large late 17th-century brick building constructed by the City Chamber on Exeter Quay in 1680-1. It is a Grade I Listed Building lying within the Riverside Conservation Area. The proposed works included the repair and reinstatement of decayed timber in the lower parts of the staircase including repair of the wainscotting, the removal of the partitions beneath the stair to increase ventilation to the lower flights and the insertion of a land drain beneath the floor in the hall. The works were aimed to restore, as far as possible the original aspect and character of the staircase.[Au] |
