Abstract: |
Through a combination of archaeological recording and documentary research, the project established the detailed dimensions and probable methods of construction of the gridiron prior to its burial. The structure was built to precise imperial measurements in shuttered mass concrete, with a series of identical iron fixings along each pier to secure lengths of timber, on which landing craft rested at low tide. The state of preservation of the gridiron was good, although it had suffered with the loss of its wooden components, corrosion of ironwork and the degredation of concrete.[Au(abr)] |
