Abstract: |
There was no direct evidence of significant archaeological activity within, or in the immediate vicinity of the study area. The area was, prior to the 17th century, in use as coppice woodland. Along with the rest of Clifton Wood, it was reclaimed for cultivation sometime during the late 17th or early 18th centuries. In 1835 the Clifton National School was built on the upper terrace. The Clifton Poor-Law Union workhouse was built on the lower terrace. The application site was bombed during World War II, ending the existence of the Clifton National School. [Au(abr)] |
