Abstract: |
The structural recording of the bridge footings at Old Sarum was undertaken in advance of renovation work. Documentary evidence pointed to the fact that the bridge was excavated prior to the construction of the modern footbridge. The plans provided evidence of three phases of bridge footings in the area of the existing masonry, and that the masonry was consolidated prior to display. Comparison with a later plan indicated that the structure was little altered. The remains were originally loosely interpreted as a bridge footing. A re-evaluation of the archaeology suggested that the western section may have been the base of an outer gatehouse, built to house the drawbridge pit and winding mechanism. The rest of the masonry was interpreted as the piers for the bridge. [Au(abr)] |
