Abstract: |
The evaluation identified significant medieval and post-medieval remains. A very large feature, partially lined with sandstone flags, was identified to the west of Venn Street. This feature contained a number of waterlogged clay deposits, creating anaerobic conditions in which considerable amounts of organic material had been preserved. This included two worked wooden stakes, which were positioned upright at the edge of the feature. Pottery dating from the 14th or 15th centuries was also recovered from the clay deposits. Two further features were identified immediately to the west of Oldgate, both of which contained several sherds of post-medieval pottery. It was concluded that further investigations would elucidate the nature of medieval and post-medieval Huddersfield. [Au] |
