Abstract: |
A walkover survey and aerial photographic search were undertaken in advance of proposed open casting for coal. The walkover survey identified 28 areas of earthworks and archaeological remains. Potentially significant sites included terraced areas on the hillslope north of Codnor Castle, platforms in an area denoted as having buildings in 1772 but none in 1880, a potential platform along a dry stream course, buildings and earthworks around Kennel Farm, shafts and spoil heaps from early mining, and the possibility of the survival of the 19th century blast furnace bases within the now demolished Codnor Ironworks. The aerial photographic search identified possible mining evidence in areas which had already been opencast, some routeways, and recent areas of opencast. It was noted that there was a good correlation between those areas noted as improved pasture on the walkover survey and the areas re-instated after earlier opencasting. Recommendations were made for evaluation of some of the earthwork features by trial trenching, and survey and recording of the adjacent Castle earthworks and canal structures. [Au(abr)] |
