Abstract: |
A monitoring and environmental sampling project within an archaeologically sensitive location (adjacent to the site of the Late Bronze Age Brigg Boat found in 1886 and four other sites) affected by the Brigg (West) Resewerage Scheme could not be executed as planned, due to engineering problems. Chemical contamination from a 19th gasworks was evident and had affected most of the site. A floating series of sediment samples was taken from a shaft excavated on the northern side of the Old River Ancholme and within the engineering constraints, stratigraphic information was recorded for shafts on each side of the river and for nearby trenches. Timbers removed from the base of the sediments on the south bank included two worked timbers, identied as possible stakes. [Au(abr)] |
