Abstract: |
The evaluation encountered an extensive dump of rough-hewn shillet and clay. This was interpreted as representing the infilling and reclamation of a former area of low-lying ground or stream channel. Based on the evidence of the pottery recovered from the bedding material, which overlay this deposit, this reclamation occurred no earlier than the mid 18th century. The same date could be ascribed to the building represented by the walls and floors located on top of this material. The position and alignment of the wall accorded with that of a building shown on an 1880 OS. [Au(adp)] |
