Abstract: |
The watching brief was carried out during development work on the site. This involved watching the commercial clearance of the New Bunhill Fields burial ground, to identify any patterns present and to collect any surviving coffin furniture. Around 14,300 burials were removed from the site, for reburial in Trent Park Cemetery. Exceptional preservation led to the collection of 1468 coffin plates from the works. These formed a unique collection from London of 19th century material from an extra-mural cemetery rather than a vault. No evidence for any earlier activity was found. [Au(adp)] |
