Abstract:
The proposed development of the site required the excavation of five evaluation trenches, four within the main factory buildings and a fifth adjacent to the City Wall. A probable late medieval or early post-medieval east to west road, heavily wheel-rutted, was exposed in Trench 3 close to the junction of Chapelfield Road East and Chantry Road, and may have been a forerunner of the latter. Trench 2, to the south of Chantry Road produced evidence for an early post-medieval brickearth extraction pit and many later pits probably relating to the later post-medieval occupation of this area. A large pit filled with demolition debris may have contained remnants of a 16th or early 17th century stable, known to have existed in the immediate vicinity. Within the factory, evidence of the 18th and 19th century development of the area was found in all four trenches, in the form of brick wall foundations and garden features. Trench 5, close to the City Wall, revealed the remnants of several phases of the documented intra-mural road, scoured by wheel ruts and sealed by the rebuilt internal bank of the City Wall. Built onto and over the bank, a sequence of road surfaces represented the southern edge of the post-medieval and modern line of Cobburg Street. [Au(abr)]
