Abstract:
Archaeological observations were made during groundworks for the construction of a swimming pool at a site which lay to the east of a Norman church, and in the garden of a manor house which appeared to have dated from the 17th century. Few other buildings lay near the church, which may have lain within a shrunken settlement. During the watching brief, a shallow, probably truncated, circular pit yielding 13th century pottery was found to cut the lower of two subsoil horizons. This subsoil layer also produced pottery of the 13th century, including a substantial rim sherd of a rolled-rim, wide-mouthed jar or cooking pot. Other finds from the layer included a fragment of medieval ridge tile, and small quantities of worked flint and burnt flint. No evidence was found to confirm the presence of a shrunken medieval settlement on the site. However, it was possible that an episode of truncation may have removed any evidence associated with the settlement, or that the site lay between occupation areas. The small quantity of flint recovered did not necessarily relate to any prehistoric activity within the development area, but may have indicated some low level of activity of that period within the vicinity.
