Abstract:		 It was difficult to ascertain exactly what the state of the archaeological resource within Great Torrington was, as there had never been an archaeological excavation within the town. The only useful guide for ascertaining the archaeological potential was documentary sources and cartographic evidence. The site lay within the historic core of the town and it was assumed that medieval and post-medieval remains would be present. [AIP]
