Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was carried out on a proposed development area. In addition a watching brief was undertaken on the excavation of test pits within the area. The site lay within an area where prehistoric remains had been uncovered, although none from the site itself. Peat deposits were encountered in the test pits. Any prehistoric remains were likely to lie within or below the alluvium. Iron Age and Roman remains had been recovered from the immediate vicinity of the site, which consisted mainly of spot finds and may be the result of exploitation of the marshes in the Roman Periods. There was no evidence for Saxon activity and only few references to medieval activity were identified. Cartographic sources from the post-medieval period showed little change in the area between 1777 and 1938. After this date, a large bank was constructed and the course of Mucking Creek was shifted as a result of tipping after this date. The sources showed the importance of the creek for trade, with wharves present on both banks. In addition they showed the increasing exploitation of the area as a source of aggregates. [Au(abr)]
