Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken of the site which considered the archaeological potential of No. 168 Fenchurch Street in advance of the proposed redevelopment of the site. To achieve this, the report summarised the results of previous archaeological investigation (1968-69, 1976, 1995 and 1997). These were considered in the light of a study of details of the existing foudations and the proposed development. The site lay in an area of considerable archaeological significance. The recently demolished Barclays building overlay the area of the south-east corner of both the first forum, constructed in c.AD 75, and the larger second forum, constructed c.AD120. Substantial remains of early Roman structures and a metalled area preceding the first forum had been recorded in the 1880s and 1960s and 70s. The eastern part of the site was the former site of the medieval church and churchyard of St Dionis Backchurch, rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren in the 17th century and demolished in 1878. The report concluded that there were archaeological remains in two areas where the proposed development would require archaeological excavation: a lorry lift in the current single basement in the north-eastern corner of the site and a combined lift and and stair shaft outside of the present basement in the south-east. There was a potential for the preservation in situ of surviving archaeological deposits in the remaining 30% of the single basement area. Further early evaluation of this area was proposed to confirm the extent and significance of remains and to enable the the design team to use areas of modern disturbance for elements of the new structure. Further early evaluation was proposed for the areas of the required new piles [Au(adp)]
