Abstract: |
Archaeological monitoring was undertaken during works to the rear of the Lloyds Bank premises during reduction in level, regrading of a garden terrace and rebuilding of its retaining wall. All of the soil removed was part of a single dump, of probable early 19th century date, forming the make-up of the raised terrace. This had sealed the partially demolished bases of sandstone walls probably flanking a flight of steps running up the centre of the property, associated with an earlier rear property wall slightly to the east the the existing wall. No evidence for medieval or early post-medieval deposits was observed, although these were likely to be sealed below the make-up of the later terraces. [Au(adp)] |
