Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken during consolidation works between Micklegate Bar and Victoria Bar at chainage 492-587 to determine the character, date and state of preservation of any archaeological deposits disturbed by the numerous excavations. At Tower 10 excavation of backfill suggested that the present rampart wall was either a later re-build on a slightly different line, or at least a later remodelling and narrowing of the wall, perhaps utilising the outer face of the wall unchanged. Excavations also raised questions concerning the style of the original wall walk, a timber platform supported by struts from the wall with no connection to the ground was considered a possibility, rather than that now present.
