Abstract:
Archaeological observations were undertaken during development work on the site. Over most of the area it was found that the very substantial gas works structures had destroyed all traces of earlier buildings and deposits. Significant remains of the Victoria pottery remained. These included the sub-surface foundations of two kilns and the walls and floor of an associated workshop. A substantial amount of locally produced pottery was recovered. The material was important in the context of the archaeology of Plymouth and 19th century ceramic studies in general. It provided a representative sample of the range of forms and styles of decoration being produced at the Victoria factory. Only very few examples had been identified before the investigations, as the majority of the products of the pottery were not stamped with identification marks. [Au]
