Abstract: |
A desktop assessment indicated that the development area was likely to contain well-preserved archaeological deposits of great importance, principally related to the foundation and growth of Southampton from c. AD950-1940. Some finds (likely to be residual) of prehistoric and Roman date may have been expected on the site. A major redevelopment of the area appeared to have taken place in the late 11th/early 12th century with the infilling of the defences and the apportionment of the new land created for a number of wealthy merchants. By the mid 15th century some properties had been subdivided, others amalgamated. Survival of archaeological deposits was likely to have been excellent as shown by the excavations that had already taken place on different parts of the site since the late 1950s. [Au(abr)] |
