Abstract: |
Three test-pits were excavated 1m away from three walls of the keep at Rochester Castle, with the aim of assessing the archaeological potential and implications of the land where it was proposed to place a series of floodlights. The castle was a SAM with activity dating back to the Romans, and a Norman keep. No sign of Roman or medieval activity was observed within the test-pits. Test-pits 1 and 2 contained deposits which were conclusively post-1825 (such certainty being possible due to the presence of blue and white transfer pottery). Deposits within test-pit 3 could not be conclusively dated, but post-dated the abandonment of the castle. It was anticipated that the excavations for the proposed series of spotlights would not encounter any significant archaeological remains. [Au(adp)] |
