Abstract: |
An archaeological assessment was undertaken following the submission of a planning application for the redevelopment of the site as a joint residential and commercial complex. The site lay within the Wandle/Colliers Wood Archaeological Priority Zones as identified by the Greater London Archaeology Service and was c.200m north of the SAM of Merton Priory. The development site was within the northern corner of the priory precinct and it was thought that the precinct wall once ran through the site. The site was occupied by a substantial building prior to 1768, which continued as a single residential dwelling until the early 20th century. Given the possibility of encountering medieval archaeological deposits associated with the priory, it was thought that an archaeological evaluation of the area would be required as part of the planning process, to determine the presence of and assess the condition and significance of archaeological deposits.
