Abstract: |
A trial trench 9.1m by 1.9m was excavated in order to fufil a condition upon planning permission. The only structural element revealed appeared to relate to a long thin rectangular building which had appeared on a 1877 O.S. map. The horizon through which the now demolished building cut was almost certainly of post-medieval date. The evaluation indicated that there was comparatively little in the way of medieval or early post-medieval structural evidence on the site. The important evidence consisted of layers of dumped material which overlay the peat deposits in the area. Preservation from the peat was good and even the horizon which sealed it was rich in domestic waste, albeit of an intermix of medieval and early post-medieval material. [Au(adp)] |
