Abstract: |
Four trenches were excavated on the south front of Claydon House with the purpose of investigating the cause of cracking affecting the south wall of the Library in the west wing. Trench revealed the footings the wall and a brick drain leading away from the base of the wall. Trench 8 was excavated in order to assess the condition of a culvert recorded in a 19th century plan of the house. The culvert was located and recorded and a watching brief undertaken across trench, in order to explore a blockage in this culvert. This culvert was encountered at 1.4m deep and was recorded. Trench 10 was cut in order to assess the condition of a salt-glazed pipe which cut through the footings of the south wall. A previously unknown culvert was encountered and its layout recorded.
