Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at a proposed development site, within which potential cropmarks had been identified. A number of soilmarks and cropmarks had been recorded in the surrounding area, including three soilmarks representing possible sunken featured buildings, which lay within a penannular enclosure of possible prehistoric date. An Iron Age occupation site lay to the north of the study area, and Bronze Age occupation had been identified to the south-west. The site lay within the estate of Beaulieu, which had been constructed by Henry VIII in 1518. During the evaluation, limited evidence of prehistoric activity was identified through pottery sherds within silty natural deposits within two of the excavated trenches, and struck flint collected from the topsoil over the site. An isolated ditch, tentatively dated to the prehistoric period, was located in the north-western sector of the site, an area previously thought to have been of little archaeological potential. The evaluation trenches which overlay cropmark plots revealed no archaeological features. It was concluded that the cropmarks may have been a product of mixed geological drift deposits. [Au(adp)] |
