Abstract:
A desk-based study supported by preliminary fieldwalking, auger and geophysical surveys, was undertaken to assess the archaeological implications of part of the proposed A453 (T) improvement. Fourteen sites/areas of archaeological interest were identified and included cropmark enclosures of prehistoric or Romano-British date; the site of a Roman Villa at Glebe Farm; cropmarks of medieval agricultural activity; post-medieval field boundaries; a post-medieval mill mound; a Romano-British pottery scatter; Clifton Green and Village; a relict watercourse; and ring-ditches representing the ploughed-out remains of Bronze Age burial mounds.
