Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation comprised four trenches across the site. Archaeological deposits of medieval and post-medieval date were recorded in all four trenches. It was possible that in the western side of the area under investigation these deposits may have extended to a depth in excess of 2.5m. At the east of the site natural subsoil was reached at a depth of 0.6m. In Trench 4 natural subsoil was not reached. It was dominated by a thick layer of boulder clay, into which a stone lined chamber had been cut. Several cobbled surfaces were unearthed in Trench 1 and thought to belong to a mid-19th century stable. A stone culvert and a wall were also found in Trench 1 along with sherds of medieval pottery. Trench 2 was cut by the culvert and there was evidence for walls and a brick drain duct of modern origin. In trench 3 a shallow pit and one sherd of medieval pottery were recorded, together with cobbles which formed a suggested floor surface and remains of a wall. In trench 4 a rectangular stone lined chamber was found and its nature and waterlogged fill suggested that it was part of a drainage system or cesspit. Overall several pottery pieces, one animal bone piece, sixteen pieces of oyster shell and four pieces of metal were found. [Au(adp)] |
