Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that a scatter of prehistoric finds and features had been recorded in the surrounding area, including flint artefacts and a gully containing Late Bronze Age pottery. Roman artefacts and features had been recorded at a number of sites, and an enclosure with post-holes, stake-holes and a hearth of 12th-13th century date had also been found. The assessment site was likely to have lain within the fields of the Roman, Saxon and medieval settlement of Staines, which was concentrated around the Roman road, parish church and later High Street to the north. Cartographic evidence indicated that the site had probably lain undeveloped within farmland until the mid-late 19th century. It was concluded that archaeological remains were unlikely to be present at the site, and that no further archaeological work would be necessary. [Au(adp)] |
