Abstract: |
Three watching briefs were undertaken during ancillary works associated with the Royal Opera House development. Two of these, the Thames Water connection pit and the Floral Street enabling works produced no positive archaeological results. A third, the London Electricity trench located in the Piazza recorded archaeological deposits from the Middle Saxon to the post-medieval periods. Two distinct areas of gravel metalling indicated a road, alley or yard areas. These deposits were covered by dark earth. The latest strata in the sequence were two small brick cellars with arched roofs that were probably later additions to the Inigo Jones arcade from the 17th century development of the Covent Garden Piazza.
