Abstract: |
The assessment was undertaken as a result of proposals to carry out emergency repairs to stabilise Elmswell Old Hall, a Grade II* listed building. The assessment was made on a study area with a radius of 500m around the Hall site, with a peripheral area to the west. In all, a total of 31 archaeological sites or find-spots were found to be located either within the study area or in the immediate vicinity, highlighting the fact that the hall lay within an area of national importance. These sites ranged from Neolithic and Bronze Age Barrows, Iron Age settlement and cemetery sites, Romano-British ritual and settlement sites, Anglo-Saxon cemeteries and possible settlements, a medieval village and moated site and post-medieval farm buildings and field systems. The importance of the known archaeological remains was assessed and projections were made of the likely damage that would be caused to suspected archaeological sites during construction works.
