Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of an office development, which lay within the medieval core of Egham. Evidence for settlement from the Neolithic to post-medieval times had been recorded in the surrounding area, which was particularly noted for important finds dating from the Late Bronze Age to the Early Iron Age. During the evaluation, a post-medieval wall foundation and a cobbled surface which may have dated from as early as the 17th century were recorded. A brick-domed well or 'water bottle' of late 18th-early 19th century date and a pit cut by a later ditch were also revealed. Two sherds of medieval pottery were found at the surface of the ditch; one post-medieval sherd and a few fragments of tile lay within its fill. Four tile fragments were recovered form the pit. It was concluded that the archaeological features and artefacts discovered during the evaluation had highlighted areas within the site which had further archaeological potential. [AIP] |
