Abstract:
Desk-based assessment and a trial excavation were carried out at the proposed site of a swimming pool. The desk-based study identified that several tenement groups had been recorded in the vicinity of the site, and that pottery of 12th century and later dates had been found during construction of the adjacent hotel in 1971. The site lay towards the rear of the plots of former properties fronting onto King Street. Cellars existed along much of the former frontage. Excavation of a test-pit revealed large pits of 13th century date, overlain by post-medieval soil horizons. A well containing late 17th to early 18th century pottery, a stone-lined pit and other post-medieval pits were also recorded. A drain was found which had been keyed into the lining of the stone-lined pit, and which ran to an opening through the side of the well pit. This suggested that the well had fallen out of use as a water supply and had been re-utilised as a sump to take the drainage from the pit. Two sherds of late Saxon pottery, 13th and 14th century pottery and an assemblage of 17th-20th century sherds were recovered. It was concluded that surviving evidence of medieval buildings fronting onto King Street was unlikely to be uncovered during the course of groundworks, but that medieval or earlier pits and other cut features could be exposed during excavation of the swimming pool area.
