Abstract:
An archaeological field evaluation was undertaken in advance of proposed development. The site covered an area of c.24ha and included the former North Pit of Rainton Colliery and associated dwellings. The desk-based assessment and geophysical survey had indicated that remains of the North Pit and associated structures would probably have survived as sub-surface features. In particular, it was anticipated that extensive remains of a colliery waggonway, originating from the 18th century would be encountered. Five evaluation trenches were investigated during the fieldwork, revealing substantial evidence of industrial activity relating to the North Pit, along with evidence of post-medieval and modern agricultural activity. In addition, the fieldwork involved the clearance and recording of a standing building associated with the North Pit. In summary, the evaluation indicated that features associated with the North Pit and North Pit Farm, including elements of the timber waggonway, survived in relatively good condition across the site.
