Abstract: |
An appraisal of St. Mary's Church and churchyard identified that the present building was a 19th century Grade II Listed structure situated within an ancient churchyard, and that the churchyard wall was also Listed. St. Mary's was thought to have been a 'mother-church' for Southampton during the medieval period, and may also have been of high status in the middle and late Saxon periods. It was likely that a church had stood at this location for over a thousand years, and that the churchyard had been one of the principal burial grounds for the Saxon town. The potential of the site for archaeological remains of the Saxon period was considered to have been diminished by the impact of later burials and church building. [AIP] |
