Abstract: |
The current investigations found evidence for three phases of activity. The earliest phase, dating to the 10th-11th centuries, was represented by two pits sealed by a 15th-16th century ploughsoil. Phase 2 comprised a post hole and brick culvert aligned north-south, Phase 3 features consisted of ten north-west by south-east aligned gullies which contained 95kg of animal bone associated with tannery waste. The re-cut of the medieval moat was filled with Phase 3 domestic rubbish and several garden soils were recorded. The concentration of Phase 3 features may have related to the landscaping of the ground around Grove House by their own Lancelot 'Capability' Brown. [Au(abr)] |
